Can lilies make you sick?

While not all lilies are toxic, many are, including the Easter lily, the tiger lily, the day lily, the calla lily, and the Asian lily. The calla lily is especially dangerous to kids, causing stomach upset, vomiting, skin irritations, blurred vision, and headache.

The lily family is mostly pollen-free so they won’t cause pollen allergies. However, be careful because both Oriental and Stargazer lilies carry an intense aroma. That strong scent might trigger people who get migraines or are sensitive to fragrances. Of course, not all flowers possess that heavy aroma.

The most usefull answer is: the scent of real lilies can be equally troubling, causing breathing difficulties in affected persons. If you are allergic to the scent of lilies, stay away from all lily-scented materials and avoid the flower itself.

The California Poison Control System identifies the following as skin-irritating lilies: Crinum lily (Crinum spp.), calla lily, plants in the Lilium family, lily of the valley and the belladonna lily (Amaryllis belladonna), which grows in USDA plant hardiness zones 7a through 10b.

Can lilies give you a headache?

Then, is the star Lily poisonous?

The toxicity of the star lily (Zigadenus fremontii) is so well known that it is also known as death camas. It grows in U. S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 10. The gloriosa lily (Gloriosa superba), also known as the climbing lily or glory lily, makes your mouth, throat, tongue and lips go numb if eaten.

Can gardenias cause headaches?

As with Stargazer lilies, gardenias are low pollen but heavy fragrance so they might trigger headaches in individuals susceptible to migraines.

Strong smells can trigger heavy migraines, so fragrant flowers are often the most troublesome. But you don’t have to fear flowers if you’re prone to migraines.
